Day 6: $100 JC Penney Gift Card!

As much as I love shopping online, nothing can quite replace the fun of heading into a department store, ready to do battle with your holiday shopping list.  JCPenney generously provided me with a gift card to shop for a holiday party outfit or a few holiday treats for loved ones.

One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is shopping for children in need.  The mall near my home has a large Christmas tree with tags on it.  Each tag is for a different child, and includes their age, gender, and their holiday needs & wants.  I usually do a girl and a boy, but this year the boys all listed things like iPods and laptops, which were way beyond my price range.  Instead, I picked two girls – eleven and twelve years old.  Both wanted the usual stuff – clothing, jewelry, makeup.  I was so thankful to have their sizes on the card, since I have no idea what the average 11 & 12 year old fits into.

JCPenney had such a great selection in both the children & teen departments (one girl was wearing clothes from each), and I was so relieved to find a general lack of “mini-prostitute” apparel, which seems rampant in most stores.  For $140 (including the gift card JCPenney supplied), I was able to get both girls 5 shirts, a sweatshirt, a pair of jeans, lounge pants, and several sets of jewelry.  Yes, you read that right – about 20 items for under $200!!!

I felt great getting to bring two big bags of gifts back to customer service for those little girls.  I was also genuinely amazed at the great deals.  The staff at JCPenney was incredibly patient and helpful, and even pulled out some extra coupons when they heard what I was doing.  It was great to feel like the store was a big community helping me.  Customer service tends to be particularly lacking around the holidays – and while it’s understandable, I appreciate the extra effort the employees at JCPenney put in!
