Braiding How-To

Posted on: September 16, 2009 @ 6:00 am     3 Comments »

It seems like every celebrity has been rocking a braid recently. Here are some examples I love…

The chick from Heroes, 1/2 the Olsen Whore Twin duo, Sarah Jessica Parker…

Name Escapes Me, Nicole Ritchie, Jessica Alba

Okay, so I’m not particularly interested in WHO is wearing them… I just think they look really cute. My hair’s not quite long enough for me to wear braids (maybe if I had someone do it for me!) but here are some great videos from Hulu for you DIY girls!

Triple Braid:

Front Braid:

Headband Braid:

Chafing Relief from Monistat

Posted on: August 12, 2009 @ 6:00 am     No Comments »

monistatMonistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel…  Otherwise known as my new miracle product.  I am completely and totally in love with this product, with absolutely no complaints.

*If this is old news, pardon me–I recall this product being released at least a year ago, but somehow, it’s eluded me until recently.  Fortunately, my endlessly awkward boyfriend had a tube (something about wearing tight pants to work; don’t ask) which I commandeered.*

Basically, my n0t-s0-petite thighs make wearing skirts and dresses for more than fifteen minutes (at least, when I’m going to be walking around) a rather unpleasant experience.  I used to wear stockings all the time, but it’s just way too hot in the summer…  So, since about May, I’ve just been suffering.

Now, about a quarter sized squirt of this miracle product totally solves the issue.  Soothing Care’s formulation is very similar to foundation primer* and goes on just as smooth.  It absorbs quickly, so I don’t feel greasy or uncomfortable, and it doesn’t cause any staining if it gets on my clothes.  Instead of scraping together, my thighs glide smoothly, as if I was wearing silk shorts.  And, the Soothing Care lasts all day long (even when it’s hot!) so I don’t have to come up with any excuses to put a hand up my dress while I’m out.

A word from the makers:

  • Non-greasy POWDER-GEL™ skin protectant formula with dimethicone. Dries to form a silky, breathable barrier to fight friction.
  • Prevents chafing and irritation caused by moisture, heat, and movement. Ideal for treating everyday intimate discomforts of athletes, plus-size women, new moms and bikini area waxers or shavers.
  • Fast-acting formula comforts chafed skin. Works with just one application.
  • Fragrance-free and non-staining. Discreet relief without damage to your undergarments.
  • Non-irritating formula with vitamin E and soothing aloe. Gentle enough for daily use on even your most delicate areas.

You can also use Soothing Care on your arms, breasts, etc.- pretty much anywhere your clothing or skin is rubbing uncomfortably.  *Also, people apparently DO use it as makeup primer.  I’m too worried that I’ll break out if I put it on my face, but if you Google it, there are a lot of discussion board postings about using it as makeup…  That one’s your call.

Want your own?  You know you do!  The Monistat “Where to Buy” page recommends Target, Wal-Mart, CVS, Rite Aid, grocery stores–pretty much anywhere you buy other Monistat products.  You can also pick up a tube on Drugstore.com for $7.99.  Worth EVERY PENNY!

American Vintage Now at Rue La La!

Posted on: August 06, 2009 @ 6:00 am     No Comments »

American Vintage isn’t a brand I’m familiar with- but I’m totally digging their boutique on Rue La La!  They’re clothes are basic and chic, simple and modern…  Great pieces to stock up on and then mix and match all year long!  I definitely think the original prices were on the high side (I’m soooo not paying $59 for a tank top) but the RLL Boutique prices are right on.  I know that you can stock up on tee’s and tanks at Wal-Mart, but I wholeheartedly believe in investing in quality pieces that will last longer!

These are some of my favorite pieces from the boutique, mainly because of their layering AND transitional abilities…  They can be layered with lots of seasonal colors (each piece is available in various shades), from pastel spring hues to rich fall gem tones.  Also, the tops can go from being cute with cutoffs to professional with blazers or fun with adorable skirts and cropped boots for fall.  All of the pieces pictured are priced between $19 and $59, so it won’t cost a fortune to stock up on a few faves!

Rue La La is a member’s only site, so if you haven’t signed up and want to hit this awesome boutique (or check out the amazing selection of other boutiques!) now’s your chance.  I’m officially inviting you!  Just visit Rue La La and click on “a member invited me.” Use my email address- laney@thefashionablegal.com – and you’re all set to start shopping!

20% Off at SWAKdesigns (Plus Size Fashion)

Posted on: August 04, 2009 @ 12:28 am     No Comments »

Now’s a great time to stock up on essentials from SWAKdesigns!  I several pieces from them, ranging from fab skinny jeans to flowy summer dresses!  I’ve reviewed some of their great merchandise before, but here’s a quick reminder of my must-haves to keep in mind while you’re browsing!

Maribelle Dark Wash Skinny Jeans

Mirabelle Dark Wash Skinny Jeans ($49.99).  I really hate the picture they’re using, but wanted to give you an idea of what they look like- nobody stands at that angle, so they jeans are much more flattering.  My only caution is that they don’t just look hot- they are HOT!  So don’t plan on wearing them in the summer, but stock up for fall when 2% spandex will make you feel sexy, not sweaty.

Camilia Dress

Camilia Dress ($46.99).  This isn’t a piece I own, but I think it’s so sweet and pretty!  The colors and cut are timeless, so this is a piece you can wear this summer and then pull out again next spring!

Kayla

Kayla Dress ($34.99).  This one I do own- and I love it so much I have it in Pink and Aqua!  My only issue is that even with my full bust, the v-neck goes very low on me…  but it’s nothing a cute tank in a complimentary color can’t fix!  I layer it with lace bordered camis that provide a little extra control and get so many compliments!

Katie Tiered Skirt

Katie Tiered Skirt ($32.99).  This is another piece I don’t have but really like the look of!  Plus, I think the colors will take you right into fall, especially if you pair it with some cute brown flats, a neutral tee, and a brown bomber jacket.  Very hip and chic!

CODE:  Summer20

Free Shipping on orders world wide (min. $40 order)

Fun Summer Clutches from Handbag Heaven

Posted on: July 29, 2009 @ 6:00 am     2 Comments »
clutches

Big, hobo or tote bags are great for most occasions-school, shopping, running errands… They safely store all those things you need, the essentials like lip balm, lip gloss, lip stick, a compact, cellphone, blotting paper, planner, pens, another lipstick, coupons, a book, small purchases, a notebook, a drink- okay, wait, is that just me?

However, no matter how much, er, stuff I take out of my purse before I go out at night, my usual bulky bag is just too much! A small, summer-hued clutch is so much more chic and polished for an evening on the town (or a quick dash out) when all you need is some cash or plastic, an ID, and only your makeup must-haves.

Handbag Heaven has a great selection of affordable clutches is a huge variety of patterns, colors, and sizes (from almost-purse to micro-mini)! Above are some of my favorites, in summer’s very best shades. I’m especially fond of the rose topped one and the lime green sucker on top.

Want an extra discount on their already low prices?  Use the banner below and score an extra 15% off.  You’re welcome!

Summer Shoe Trend: Fringe

Posted on: June 30, 2009 @ 4:52 am     No Comments »

I’ll admit, fringe definitely isn’t one of my favorite shoe trends. However, I’ve found some cute shoes that embody the trend without making me want to cover my eyes (and my feet)! Unfortunately, this isn’t a case where beauty comes cheap.

BC Footwear Hot Springs Sandal, $20.00

GUESS Galiena Fringe Sandal, $63.22

Mia Donella Fringed T-Strap Wedge, $69.95

Kenneth Cole Reaction Arma Dare Wedge Fringe, $88.95

Cindy Says Tassel Fringe Flat, $119.95

Six Steps to Show-Stopping Legs

Posted on: June 17, 2009 @ 2:00 pm     No Comments »

pictures-irene-suarez-bending-over-sexy-long-legs-heelsNow that it’s summer, it’s time to show some leg! However, over all those long winter months, things might be a little… fuzzy. I know that I don’t shave my legs as often in the winter, and consequentially, my skin has become more sensitive and there’s definitely some regrowth to deal with. Getting back into a pattern of frequent shaving totally isn’t my favorite thing ever. The average woman shaves 11 times per month and I think I’m starting to keep up! I’ve got some product reviews on the way to help you get an idea of what should be in your anti-hair arsenal! And in the meantime, here are Gillette’s 6 Steps to Show-Stopping Legs!

Step 1: Prepare Your Legs for a Smooth Shave- According to a recent survey, 64% of women agree that a smooth shave makes their legs look sexy. Prepare your legs by soaking in a warm bath or shower for two minutes to hydrate hair so that it is significantly easier to cut. Apply a shave gel with a rich, creamy lather before shaving to keep hair hydrated and smooth the razor’s glide.

Step 2: Select the Razor That Works Best for You- Mascara, lipstick, and a razor are the three most important products in a woman’s beauty arsenal, according to a recent survey. But the right razor is critically important. Whether you’re a woman who wants to indulge her skin and sense in the shower or someone who values a close and comfortable shave with no missed hairs, Venus has a perfect razor for you.

Step 3: Leave Your Legs with an Incredible Glow- After shaving, moisturize your legs so your skin glows and feels supple. A rich moisturizer or shimmer lotion rehydrates and replenishes your skin’s natural radiance.

Step 4: Slip Into Your Favorite Flirty Skirt- You’ve taken the right steps to get your legs smooth, so now every outfit in your closet is fair game. Trade in that dull pantsuit for something feminine and fun- like your favorite flirty skirt- to showcase your show-stopping legs.

Step 5: Finding the Perfect Shoe-

The Ultimate Sexy Shoe: According to shoe designer Courtney Crawford, the most stylish shoe is the stiletto. They are perfect for creating a sleek silhouette that highlights the contours of your smooth legs. Stilettos help a woman to feel taller, and they lengthen the look of her leg. For those who are more adventurous, Crawford recommends a hell with a low-cut front that reveals “to cleavage.”

The Size Illusionist: Be aware of proportions. If you’re a “full figured” woman, Crawford suggests a high platform-that will even out your silhouette, while offering a flattering boost in height.

The Sure-Fire Shoe: According to Crawford, no matter your size, shape or color, wedges are a must for accentuating great legs! Wedges are versatile enough to complement most of your wardrobe- from sun dresses to the micro mini- and are in style every season.

Step 6: Ready to Go… from Leg to Toe!- Now that your legs are smooth and you’ve found the perfect shoes, you’re ready to strut with confidence. Be sure to keep your legs close together and as straight as possible; imagine a straight line in front of you, and walk to it. Place each step in front of the other so you loo and feel like you’re walking the runway.
