Spring 2010 Nail Trends | China Glaze Edition

Posted on: March 12, 2010 @ 12:00 pm     No Comments »

As usual, there’s a rainbow of “in” colors for Spring & Summer – pretty much everything bright and cheerful.  Three nail polish shades I’ve been seeing over and over again are yellow, teal, and green.  Which is super exciting for me, because those are three of my favorite colors.

China Glaze recently released a fabulous new collection called Up & Away (which I chatted about here).  It features the three colors I mentioned, in absolutely to die for shades.  For your benefit, I shall stop with the talking and proceed to the pictures…

Happy Go Lucky:

This is absolute sunshine in a bottle.  Great coverage with 1 coat, flawless with 2.

Flyin High:

Surprisingly, this photographed very accurately.  It’s a creamy, gorgeous shade that’s either sky blue or teal – or somewhere in between.

Four Leaf Clover:

This is the color I’ve been waiting for all my life.  It’s the perfect green.  The photograph doesn’t do justice to how deep and glorious this polish is.

You can pick up these shades, as well as there rest of the Up & Away Collection on Amazon (via the links above).

Zoya at New York Fashion Week! (Part 2)

Products Used: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha, Zoya Nail Polish in Jolie, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Suno’s opening presentation was jaw dropping to say the least.  Using their signature Kenyan prints, designers Max Osterweis and Erin Betty playfully combined them with fresh innovative ones.  This chaotic mix of patterns gave off and fun, lively vibe that any party girl would want to add to her collection.

Manicurist Amber Stores used Tasha with a thin coat of Jolie to create a luminous look flattering the make-up. Prior to polishing Amber prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor Topcoat finishing with Armor Basecoat.

NYFW:  Diesel Black Gold – Fall 2010
Show Date: Tuesday, 2/16/2010 – 2 PM
Location:  Warehouse 44th St.

Diesel Black and Gold’s Fall 2010 show screamed confidence. They stuck with the distressed, faded jeans, but this time they add a more gothic/ western vibe to their looks.  This season had a plethora of black denim to choose from and for the more adventurous type there was a pair of black leather pants paired with a denim long sleeve shirt. All over the board there was black in denim and leather form, flannels, light blue denim pieces, and clean, tailored suits sprinkled in throughout the collection.

Manicurist Amber Stores sprayed each hand with Zoya Germinator prior to manicure. She then prepped each nail with Zoya Anchor basecoat as well as with Zoya Get even. She then polished each nail with a base of  Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha and then a top layer of Zoya Nail Polish in Erin creating a gorgeous nude nail.  After polishing she finished with Zoya Anchor Topcoat and Zoya Renew. Lastly, for a nice, sweet touch Zoya Lemon Dream lotion was used to soften all hands.

NYFW:  Thuy  – Fall 2010
Show Date: Tuesday, 2/16/2010 – 3 PM
Location:  Bryant Park – Salon

Products Used:  Zoya Remove+,  Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Get Even, Zoya Armor Topcoat, Zoya Hurry Up speed drops, Zoya Renew Polish Rejuvenator, Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha, Zoya Nail Polish in Erin, Zoya Lemon Dream lotion, and Zoya Germinator.

Layers! Something must have been in the water at Fashion Week because almost everyone was using layers, including Thuy.  Thuy, however, used layers with pockets and folds creating a beautiful hip fullness.

Thuy also used nudes using Zoya Tasha was used as a the base color with Zoya a layer of Erin over the top for a bit of glamour. Manicurist Sunshine Outing prepped each nail with Zoya Remove+ and Anchor basecoat finishing with a topcoat of Armor.

Thuy brought the crowd, and in this crowd were some BIG names, Kim Kardashian, Housewives; Kelly Bensimon, Danielle Staub, Jill Zarin, Alix McCord, Simon Van Kempen, Tabatha Coffey, Olivia Palermo, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Eve Salvail, Susie Essman, Mia Moretti, and Markus Klinko.

NYFW: Susan Cianciolo – Fall 2010
Show Date: Wednesday, 2/17/2010 – 4:30 PM

:  Zoya Remove+,  Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Get Even, Zoya Armor Topcoat, Zoya Hurry Up speed drops, Zoya Renew Polish Rejuvenator, Zoya Nail Polish in Gia, Veruschka, Ibiza, OC Cooler and more, Zoya Lemon Dream lotion, and Zoya Germinator.

Combining art and fashion in a gallery presentation, Susan Cianciolo’s Fall 2010 collection was more of a performance piece than the usual standing model presentation. The show Underneath the, Sea Inside a Mountain used the artistry of clothes, makeup and nail design to transport viewers to a place where they could frolic through the fields with Julie Andrews or if they so pleased, swim the seas with Ariel. Flower Children and Mermaids in an explosion of hand crafted colors and patterns all under the flashes of an artfully placed group of Japanese paparazzi. A performance indeed!

Happy to have over 300 fashion colors to choose from to create her part of the vision, Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each nail with Zoya Remove+ and Zoya Anchor Basecoat and then polished the nails in a rainbow of colors including Zoya Veruschka, Zoya Gia, Ibiza and Zoya OC Cooler and finished each look with glossy coat of Zoya Armor.

NYFW: JSong – Fall 2010

Products Used:  Zoya Remove+,  Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Get Even, Zoya Armor Topcoat, Zoya Hurry Up speed drops, Zoya Renew Polish Rejuvenator, Zoya Nail Polish in Jessica, Tasha, Bailey and Suzanne.

Romantic Fantasy is the ideal way to describe JSong’s collection. Designer Way Zen used the motto In Nature’s Magical Garden and the clothes definitely represented that. JSong followed the main theme of fashion week this season, layers, with a unique JSong spin using layers of eyelets in the shape of leaves, crochet shawls, and sheer tops with patterns similar to peacock feathers.

Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each nail with Zoya Remove+ and a basecoat of Anchor. She used Zoya Suzanne, Zoya Tasha, Zoya Jessika, Zoya Bailey and finished with a topcoat of Armor.

Zoya at New York Fashion Week! (Part 1)

Posted on: March 09, 2010 @ 12:00 pm     2 Comments »

NYFW: Toni Maticevski – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Thursday, 2/11/2010 – 2 PM
LOCATION: Altman Building (135 W. 18th St.)

PRODUCTS USED
: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya UltraGlitter in Nova  with Zoya Nail Polish in Casey, Sloane and Richelle, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Designer Toni Maticevski isn’t big on providing media with his source of inspiration. He prefers the viewer to think about what they see rather than telling them what “to see”. It is this interpretation that allows the beauty of Maticevski to be that of the beholder. Exaggerated doll-like layers and ornamentation took this viewer straight to Hollywood with a visions of starlets making the scene.

Nails complimented the clothes, hair and makeup and worked double duty as accessories. Led by the creative Dhav Naidu, Manicurist Sunshine Outing and team treated each nail as a unique canvas using Zoya Nail Polish in Casey for the warmer skin toned models and Sloane for the cool chickies. Zoya Richelle and Nova UltraGlitter went on ring fingers as accent color with Zoya Armor topcoat delivering the glossy finish.

NYFW: Peter Som – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Wednesday, 2/13/2010 – 1 PM
LOCATION: Milk Studios (450 W. 15th)

PRODUCTS USED:
Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Charity, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Using muted color, layers, and printed fabrics the chaotic yet controlled vision of Peter Som for Fall 2010 was refreshing to say the least. The added touch of Swarovski crystals enriched this diverse collection even more.

Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing with the muted mauve Charity and finishing with a topcoat of Armor. The look complimented the bruised makeup (black plum lips!) and overall moody black palette of the show.

NYFW: Joseph Altuzarra – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Wednesday, 2/13/2010 – 1 PM
LOCATION: Milk Studios (450 W. 15th)

PRODUCTS USED: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha and Erin, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

The fashion “in crowd” shows up for Joseph Altuzarra and everyone takes notes. In just a few seasons Altuzarra has managed to capture lots of attention with his recognizable looks and quality details.

To compliment the dark almost oily eye and gray/nude mouth created by the makeup team, Manicurist Indigo Smith and team prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor basecoat prior to polishing in nudes then finishing with a glossy Zoya Armor topcoat.

NYFW: Leanne Marshall – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Saturday, 2/14/2010 – 4 PM
LOCATION: Union Square Ballroom

PRODUCTS USED: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Polish in Jo, Zoya Nail Polish in Betty, Zoya MatteVelvet in Harlow, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Leanne Marshall the designer has arrived. Moving from typography as inspiration last season to topography (maps) this season the looks shown at the 2010 Fall Leanne Marshall show reflected the designers personality perfectly. Leanne’s work has greatly matured since winning Bravo’s Project Runway in 2008, now unafraid to be true to her own fragile nature, Marshall created a romantic vision for Fall 2010. The collection was true to her roots – yes, the layers are still there but now they are less structured and everywhere from coats to evening wear.

Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing and finished with an ultra glossy topcoat of Armor.

NYFW: Bibhu Mohapatra – Fall 2010
Show Date: Monday, 2/15/2010-12:30 PM
Location:  Marianne Boesky Gallery ( W 22nd St)

Products Used: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Base Coat, Zoya Nail Polish in Sasha, Zoya Nail Polish in Blair, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Bibhu Mohapatra had a major amount of hype surrounding him this year and that is all thanks to his nomination for a Rising Star Award by the Fashion Group International and his recent grant he received from the CDFA (Council of Fashion Designers America) and the New York Economic Development Corporation. Along with 11 other designers, Bibhu will be given a reduced rent in the NYC Garment Center as well as mentoring and other opportunities. This coveted spot in the CFDA Fashion Incubator and being one of the finalists for the Rising Star Awards lands Bibhu in the thick of it all with the full support of Council of Fashion Designers America and The Fashion International Group.

Given all the buzz, People were practically bursting at the seams to get into the art gallery that held his 20’s inspired collection.  Feminine and fitted pieces created an elegance that any female today would want, making Bibhu’s collection old-fashion as well as modern at the same time.

Manicurist Jackie SAULSBERY working with the Zoya Design Team came up with the combination of a full coat of Sasha layered with a thin coat of Blair creating a deep sparkly look.  Each set of nails was prepped using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing and finished with an glossy topcoat of Armor.

Alice in Wonderland Accessories

Posted on: March 05, 2010 @ 9:00 am     No Comments »

Okay so WHO is excited for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland tonight!?  I cannot freakin’ wait!  If it’s as amazing as I’m sure it will be, it will quite possibly in my Top 10 events of 2010.  If you’re not looking forward to it, don’t even tell me – I might have to fight you ; )

I’m almost equally thrilled about the wide arrange of Alice in Wonderland related accessories that are on the market.  There are items for every budget and style – I’m hoping to pick up at least a few!  To help you with your movie night style, I’ve gathered info about some of the greatest pieces (and my personal favorites) for you below.

Mad Hatter Ring ($16), Drink Me Necklace ($20)

Both of the pieces above are from Torrid.  The site also offers several adorable Alice tees and a few more pieces of jewelry, but the above really stood out.  The detail on both is fantastic and I’m totally coveting them for my Alice collection!

Charm Bracelet by Tom Binns ($124.95), Red Queen Necklace by Swarovski ($129.95)

I know, I know…  The pieces above are a tad on the expensive side.  That doesn’t quell my NEED for the bracelet.  The detail is exquisite.  And the necklace?  It doesn’t scream “Wonderland” so it can easily be incorporated into an outfit for just about any occasion.

Kirks Folly “Go Ask Alice” Charm Bracelet ($70)

If you’re looking for a more affordable charm bracelet, check out this gorgeous piece from Kirks Folly.  It’s available on QVC, which is a site I can’t seem to link from.  Just search for it on their site and you’ll be able to find it in a snap.

Just in time, OPI has released an Alice in Wonderland collection that features four sparkling polishes.  I’m particularly partial to the blue (Absolutely Alice) and multicolored (Mad As A Hatter) – the lighter red on the right (Off With Her Red!) actually doesn’t feature glitter, but the darker red on the left (Thanks So Muchness!) has a very soft sparkle.

You can pick up an OPI Alice in Wonderland Mini Nail Lacquer Set for $9.49, or get OPI Alice in Wonderland Collection Nail Polishes for $8.50/each.

Dashing Diva Manhattanite Nail Polish Preview!

Posted on: March 04, 2010 @ 9:00 am     No Comments »

Dashing Diva – re-inventing the nail salon experience – opened its first door in October, 2003 in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village to much critical acclaim. Now, there are 30 stores on 3 continents in the following countries: United States, Japan, Philippines, China and Kuwait.

Dashing Diva, New York’s favorite nail salon chain, has launched a new collection of nail polish with a longer-lasting formulation to celebrate its Manhattan roots.

The Manhattan Collection from Dashing Diva is longer-lasing and more chip-resistant than the previous Dashing Diva nail polish formulation.  With a special blend of polymers, the new and improved polish allows each manicure to last up to 10 days without chipping.  Plus, all Manhattan Collection polishes are formulated without the controversial ingredients Phthalates (DBP), Formaldehyde and Toluene – ingredients that have been linked to negative health related conditions.

In the city that never sleeps, Dashing Diva’s Manhattan Collection has over 100 nail polish shades to choose from.  Whether it’s dinner at Nobu, a walk in Central Park, a visit to the Moma, shopping on 5th Avenue or hanging out in the Village, Dashing Diva has a shade for every New Yorker!

If you checked out any of my NYFW coverage, you’re probably familiar with Dashing Diva by now – if you weren’t already a customer!  The brand and it’s nail technicians were behind many of the fabulous nail styles on the runway, whether they were soft neutrals or edgy oranges.  I was majorly into the shades and styles the Dashing Diva crew created (often mixing several polishes together or painting over pre-styled glue on nails), so you can imagine my excitement when I received a few bottles in the mail.

The shades I received are:

Harlem Nights:  A gorgeous, ruby red with a creamy finish.

Diamond District:  A fabulous, silvery metallic that will pair well with Spring 2010 Military Trends.

Times Square Celebration:  A festive gold you can rock all year ’round.

Upper West Side:  A creamy, pearly beige perfect for softer styles.

Bryant Park:  A sweet, shimmery bronze.

Harlem Nights, Upper West Side, Diamond District, Times Square Celebration, Bryant Park.

The swatches definitely don’t do these shades justice – just check out the first picture to get a feel for how shimmery and metallic the three shades to the right are.  I’m currently wearing (sparkly blue) acrylic nails, so I can’t sport any nail swatches for ya – sorry!

The collection features more than just the shades above…  It also contains polishes with cute names like “The Red Carpet,” “East Village,” “NYPD Blue,” “Central Park After Dark.”

Overall, I love these polishes!  The colors I reviewed are ones you can really wear all year round, for different events and with different styles.  An wild evening out, a formal affair, a day to the beach…  Dashing Diva has you covered! Most shades are currently available on Dashing Diva’s website, and retail for $8 a bottle.  Check them out for yourself – they come highly recommended by The Fashionable Gal!

Spring 2010 Nail Trends: Metallics

Posted on: February 25, 2010 @ 12:00 pm     No Comments »

I’ve really loved all the Spring nail trends that I’ve been seeing in photos from NYFW.  I’m excited to see all the bright colors and greens, but they’re not what I’m looking for when I do my nails before going out.  The look I’m really digging?  Metallics!

Both of the photos above (credit to Eric Yu) were created by Dashing Diva nail techs for the Nary Manivong show.  If you don’t have long, sexy nails, don’t worry…  The look started off with press-ons!  It’s really quite simple:  start with Dashing Diva Press-On Metallic Nails (in silver), then apply a coat of the brand’s “No More Alimony” polish!  The polish will be available in their Fall 2010 collection, so metallics should be going strong all year long!

Do you know of any great metallic polishes?  Zoya’s Reverie collection features six Spring colors with metallic finishes (including shade “Laney”!!!).  I’m giving the whole collection away to one lucky winner, and bottles of Laney to three runners up.  If you haven’t entered already, make sure to do so!

China Glaze Up & Away

Posted on: February 23, 2010 @ 12:00 pm     1 Comment »

When I first saw China Glaze’s Up & Away Spring Collection, I was enthralled.  The pops of teal, the peeks of yellow, the soft greens and lavenders…  All the colors I’ve been secretly longing for, lusting after, dying to wear – and they’re now all, quite literally, at my fingertips!

I was even more excited when China Glaze sent me several bottles to check out and discuss with you gals.  Before I get into the polish itself, here’s a breakdown of the fabulous color palette

Flyin’ High:  A rich, teal tinged blue that will make you think of ocean and sky at the same time.  Flyin’ High has the depth of both; a color you can easily fall into.

Four Leaf Clover:  I’m obsessed with anything green, and this baby is no exception.  It’s a glossy, rich, surprisingly bright green that will make you feel closer to Spring with each coat.

Grape Pop:  Purple’s have been in for quite a while now, and Grape Pop is just another way to wear it fabulously.  It’s a very true, royal purple that doesn’t hint of a blue or red base the way many purples do.  Pure sugary treat.

Happy Go Lucky:  This is my favorite shade in the collection – it’s a perfect, sunny yellow.  I’ve been craving anything yellow lately, so I’m all about this polish, that feels true to it’s name.

Heli-Yum:  A delicious reddish-pink, described as “Raspberry.”  It looks delicious, like berries you’d find on a slice of decadent cheesecake.  Try not to lick your manicure…

High Hopes:  This color has hints of coral, which is another huge color for the season.  If you’re nervous about going the orange route, High Hopes is a very gentle way to do so.

Lemon Fizz:  Another favorite, this yellow is a very soft shade.  If Happy Go Lucky is the sun at full might, Lemon Fizz is the rays that break through the clouds first thing in the morning.

Light as Air:  This shade is one of the three I received for review.  It’s a very soft lavender that works well with my pale skin tone.  For a pastel, it’s very bright and eye catching – it makes an equal statement to Grape Pop, but in a more subtle way.

Peachy Keen:  I’m completely in lust with this rich shade that looks juicy enough to bite into.  Your favorite fruits might not be in season  yet, but Peachy Keen is a great way to get your fill in the meantime.

Re-Fresh Mint:  The second shade I got for review; a green!  This is like the sprigs of herbs I slip into my ice tea all summer long, and is even more delicious.  It looks great alternated with Light as Air!

Something Sweet:  This shade makes me think of Twiggy.  It’s a bit of a 60’s pink, but simultaneously an Easter egg hue with a touch of lavender.  Definitely worth checking out.

Sugar High:  This is the third color I received.  At first I wasn’t thrilled – oh boy, another pink.  After wearing it for a week, I’ve been converted and now am heading the fan club for this warm rosy hue.

Since I only tried a quarter of the polishes in this collection, I can’t say how the overall application is.  Two of the three I tried were pastels, and the third was relatively light, so I can weigh in on them!  I was expecting the light cremes to be very thin and need several coats (and lots of patience).  Fortunately, I was wrong – two coats easily did the trick and made my nails look like those conversational candy hearts I’ve been snacking on looking at all week.

I took a cue from my high school style (which is normally a big mistake!) and alternated the colors on my nails.  The result was very light and fun, which is the tone of the whole collection.  Pick two favorites or go for a full ten colors – you can’t go wrong!  I can’t wait to use these colors for pedicures during sandal season, pair them with light Spring dresses, and just generally rock them whenever I can!

Zoya Reverie for Spring 2010 | Review & Giveaway

Posted on: February 22, 2010 @ 8:00 am     342 Comments »

I can’t contain my excitement as I write this post…  I’m just too thrilled!  Since I was a little girl, finding my name on ANYTHING – you know, pencils, barrettes, pins, mugs, bells…  I could never find “Laney” on anything.  It was wildly disappointing, and I still feel compelled to check “name products” whenever I see them in the store.  Of course, I still have no luck.

So when Zoya emailed me about their Spring 2010 Reverie collection, I wasn’t expecting what I found.  Granted, all of their polishes are girl’s names – and often times their unusual names – but still, years of childhood disappointment didn’t prepare me for what was coming next.

Zoya’s Reverie collection includes a polish called Laney, and it’s actually named AFTER ME!  Don’t laugh at me for the amount of joy this has brought me; unless you have a name you can never find and no one can ever spell, you just won’t understand.

For reasons beyond me, Zoya’s new collection isn’t just about me…  Even though I totally think it should be.  But no, there are five new polishes along with Laney, and really I can’t complain because they’re all just as rockin’.  And some more lucky ladies will now be able to find their names in the store, even if it’s not on a pencil (but really, this is better).  Reverie also includes Adina, Reece, Happi, Gwin, and Lana.
