Mayo Clinic Book & Journal Review & Giveaway!

Posted on: March 10, 2010 @ 9:00 am     25 Comments »

“In our work with literally thousands of patients, we’ve identified the critical habits of people who maintain a healthy weight, and the habits of those who don’t.

With
The Mayo Clinic Diet
, we’ve boiled this research down to five simple habits to help you take off the extra weight — and five habits to break so that you can keep it from coming back. Plus, we’ve made it easy, because what works best when it comes to weight loss is keeping it simple!

The Mayo Clinic Diet is composed of three sections to get you started, to keep you on track, and to give you the knowledge and tools you need to keep those unwanted pounds off for good

  1. Lose it! is a two-week quick-start program designed to help you lose 6 to 10 pounds in a safe and healthy way.
  2. Live it! is a long-term plan in which you continue to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week until you reach your goal. Then, you learn how to maintain your healthy weight for life.
  3. All the extra stuff includes meal planners, recipes, tips on overcoming challenges and much more to help you along the way.

The Mayo Clinic Diet puts you in charge of reshaping your body and improving your health — for a lifetime.”

I received a copy of The Mayo Clinic Diet – both the book and journal – for review.  I was thrilled when it arrived, but disappointed that it wasn’t a diet that would work for me.  That was NOT because there’s anything wrong with the plan, and it’s actually great for you ladies – as I’m going to give my copy away.

“The Serotonin Power Diet” Book Review

Posted on: March 01, 2010 @ 3:00 pm     3 Comments »

Recently, I was sent a copy of “The Serotonin Power Diet” by Judith J. Wurtman and Nina T. Frusztajer for review.  I’ve been working on eating healthier and losing weight (who isn’t?) so I’ve been excited to check out various diet and health related books.  Unfortunately, the general theme has been that while the books provide great plans and helpful tips, they just aren’t ones that will fit with my lifestyle.

The Serotonin Power Diet is not at all like that.  I was actually really thrilled when I got into the book – I read about 150 pages in one night, and took copious notes.  The plan is especially relevant to anyone who’s gained weight because of depression and/or medications for such conditions.  I have a naturally larger build and don’t display the healthiest tendencies, but I did gain a significant amount of weight when taking medications for a year or so.

To put it simply, the diet involves eating certain amounts of carbs at key times in order to stimulate serotonin product in the brain.  This both works to elevate moods and trigger a full feeling that will stop eating.  The portions are great, snacks are included, and you can eat a whole range of delicious food – no need to cut out your favorites entirely or lose a whole food group.  You won’t be missing out on much, so it’s an easier plan to stick to.

I haven’t actually started the The Serotonin Power Diet yet, but I plan to.  I’m working on developing healthier eating and exercise habits before I start – that way it will be easier for me to stick to.  Below, I’ve included an article about the Serotonin Power Diet from the authors, so you can get some more “official” info!

Pick up a copy from Amazon:  The Serotonin Power Diet: Eat Carbs–Nature’s Own Appetite Suppressant–to Stop Emotional Overeating and Halt Antidepressant-Associated Weight Gain

Action Guide to Weight-Loss Barriers

Posted on: January 28, 2010 @ 7:00 am     10 Comments »

By the weight-loss experts at Mayo Clinic and Donald Hensrud, M.D., M.P.H.
Authors of The Mayo Clinic Diet: Eat well. Enjoy life. Lose weight.

“Long term success with a weight program sometimes follows a bumpy, uneven path. Many obstacles can keep you from achieving a more healthy weight.

Learning to identify potential roadblocks and confront personal temptations is an important part of being successful in losing weight. To make it past the rough spots, it’s important to have strategies ready to guide your response as problems arise.

This easy-to-use action guide identifies common weight-loss barriers and practical strategies for overcoming them. If you find a strategy that helps you, include it with your weight-loss program.

The barriers are grouped into three categories: nutrition, physical activity and behaviors. To lose weight — and to maintain that weight loss — it’s important that you address all of these components.

Body Toning & Trimming Products

Posted on: January 20, 2010 @ 8:00 am     3 Comments »

I’m sure that many of you gals have resolved to become fitter and healthier in 2010.  Exercising and eating right is obviously the way to go, but incorporating products that target body problems into your routine will provide a great boost.

There are four products I’ve received for review that I’ll be testing out in the coming days, weeks, and months (depending on the products recommendations).  Of course, I’ll share my results with you – or lack thereof, though I only accepted specific products that I have positive knowledge about.

I previously shared that I was reviewing Reebok EasyTone Sneakers .  When I originally posted about them, I had just begun to wear them and hadn’t seen any results.  After wearing them as my main shoes, even without walking a significant amount, I have definitely noticed a difference.

To be honest, my thighs are too large to see if there’s any toning going on.  However, my butt has definitely benefited from the EasyTones.  While it’s not smaller (they’re not weight loss shoes, so that’s not a surprise!), the shape has completely changed.  Rather than being sort of a shapeless mass hanging off the back of me, my ass is now rounded and lifted.  So I’m completely and totally in love with the EasyTones and intend to keep wearing them, forever.

Another product I’ve received and am excited to review is Mama Mio Bootcamp for Tummies ($99).  I was thrilled with this product right off the bat when I saw that it came with a detail explanation of how and why the products work, AND a simple exercise routine to use in conjunction with them.  The product claims are practical, rather than advertising it as a miracle serum that will immediately make your fat disappear (although I wish it would).

“A radical new way to tackle tummy bulge. If you commit for 30 days, you will see results; your tummy will be tighter, flatter, smoother and more defined. Your posture will be improved, your back stronger, your skin softer – more toned, firmer and touchable. Bootcamp is a 4 minute a day skincare and exercise system in handy take-home kit. Lift, tighten and reshape your skin and lift, tighten and reshape the muscles beneath for double whammy results in only 4 minutes a day.”

My only issue with this product – and I could be wrong – is that it’s more for ladies who have only a bit of a belly, perhaps after pregnancy or after already having lost a lot of weight.  I’m not sure what sort of results it will yield for me, as I have lots of losing to do.  I’ve been doing the exercises without using the product to begin with, as I’d like to use the “Tummy Toner” and “Get Waisted” components when I have a smaller area to work with!

Talika’s Bust Serum ($49) is another product on my body improvement roster.  While I’m young thus have yet to enter into a major battle with gravity, I wear a 40D.  Because of the sheer weight of my breasts, I want to make sure that I keep them firm and prevent any unattractive stretch lines.  Also, every time I see the bottle I think of Grease – “I must, I must, I must improve my bust…”

Talika boasts that the serum will add up to 1 cup size in 6 weeks (although I secretly hope it doesn’t), as well as an 18% lift and a 70% increase in firmness.  You can read all about the manner in which the serum goes about doing that here.

I used the Bust Serum once to check the texture, smell, and feel in order to ensure that it would be a product I would actually enjoy reviewing.  It passed my test on all of those levels, so I’ll be adding it to my routine when I begin to use the rest of the Mama Mio products – I figure I should do all my “lotioning” at the same time…  As long as I keep them straight and don’t shrink my bust while increasing my waist.  Wouldn’t that be a nightmare!

Finally, this week I received a product not quite on the market:  Shapewear from ShaToBu.  ShaToBu is an innovative new type of shapewear, created by a chiropractor, that features resistance bands to help tone muscles and burn calories.

As I mentioned, the product isn’t yet available, but you can sign up on their web page to stay updated on it’s release AND to receive a free gift when you order.

I’m not going to get into the details, as that will be a separate post once I’ve had the chance to really experience the product.  Three other lovely ladies are trying it out with me, including the lovely Jen from My Beauty Bunny.  I’m really excited to see how the ShaToBu will work with the Reebok Easytones – my hope is for maximum shaping and toning!

Of course, none of these products are going to make massive improvements without other lifestyle changes and work on my part.  I’m moving back to Vermont in early February, and going to be doing yoga and water aerobics, with the intention of building up towards more strenuous activities like kickboxing and spinning.  I’m too lazy and unmotivated to just “go to the gym” as all of that big equipment just looks tedious and unpleasant!

What are you ladies doing to shape up in 2010?  Trying any products to kick start or aid your routine?  I’d love to know!

WW Day 7: Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant

Posted on: December 20, 2009 @ 9:21 pm     40 Comments »

wellness

“While you may feel that excessive underarm perspiration is your problem, alone, there are millions of people –women and men, of all ages and races — who suffer from this condition, known as axillary hyperhidrosis. Perhaps the embarrassment causes you to worry about body odor, avoid certain social situations, to alter your clothing selections or to avoid settings that you know will cause excessive perspiration.

Certain Dri Antiperspirant Roll-On for Excessive Perspiration has been the leading, dermatologist-recommended product for controlling excessive underarm perspiration for more than three decades.  While other products claim to be “clinical strength,” the Certain Dri formulations – 12% aluminum chloride in the roll-on and 25% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate in the new solid – are the strongest available over-the-counter formulas at stores nationwide for the control of excessive underarm sweating, providing up to 72 hours of protection with each application. While approximately seven million adults and teens are clinically diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm perspiration), more than 40 million more believe their perspiration to be a problem.

According to an independent survey, a majority of dermatologists prefer the formula in Certain Dri antiperspirant for treating hyperhidrosis, or excessive perspiration, over the formula in all other antiperspirants combined.”

Certain Dri is available in a roll-on or solid formulation.  I received a tube of Certain Dri, which I passed onto a friend who suffers from excessive sweating.  I think it’s great that Certain Dri is applied at night so it can go to work overnight, as opposed to products that are put on in the morning before you head into situations that can become embarrassing!

One of you will win a tube of Certain Dri!

WW Day 6: Bath & Body Works Antibacterial

Posted on: December 19, 2009 @ 7:00 am     108 Comments »

wellness

“Spread Love, Not Germs!”

Soap.  Not the most glamorous beauty accessory, but certainly an important one.  It’s the season of colds & flues, runny noses and being coughed on by strangers.  Crowded buses, filthy hand rails, packed waiting rooms.  There’s nothing fun – or fashionable – about being sick!  Concealer can only go so far in cover red noses and dark under eyes, lip balm can’t always compete with wind chapped lips, and even the most eye opening mascara won’t make it look like you got a great night’s sleep.  So what’s the solution?  Don’t get sick in the first place!

Hand washing and sanitizing is key.  Of course, this is true throughout the year as well – but in the winter time, spending hours in department stores shopping for gifts and perhaps eating more cookies than immune boosting vegetables…  Well let’s just say it’s important to kill those germs!

Of course, constant hand washing and sanitizing can lead to sore, cracked palms.  In order to avoid this equally unattractive alternative to illness, using products packed with skin nourishing ingredients is key.  Every year I stock up on products from the Anti-Bacterial line at Bath & Body Works.  I was originally attracted to the products for their amazing range of scents, but now come back for the quality.

Bath & Body Works offers several types of soap, which help target your specific hand washing needs.

deep

Deep Cleansing Soap, $4.50 or 3/$10

“Cleansing beads and germ killers get dirty hands clean and leave skin lightly scented. Triclosan kills germs, Vitamins B5 & E nourish skin, and gentle exfoliators cleanse deeply.”

Available in scents like Festive Vanilla Fig, Juniper Breeze, and Mango Mandarin.

foam

Gentle Foaming Soap, $5 or 3/$10

“Soft bursts of lightweight foam gently wash away dirt and germs, while leaving skin soft and lightly scented.  Triclosan kills germs, aloe vera soothes skin, and Pro-Vitamin B5 nourishes skin.”

Available in scents like Pink Grapefruit, Black Raspberry Vanilla, and Exotic Coconut.

moistMoisturizing Soap, $5 or 3/$10

“Even with frequent hand washing, our soothing moisturizers hydrate skin. Hands are left soft, germ-free and lightly scented.  Triclosan kills germs, Green Tea Extract soothes skin, shea butter moisturizes skin, and Vitamin E nourishes skin.”

Available in scents like Kitchen Lemon, Tropical Passionfruit, and Wild Honeysuckle.

pocket

PocketBac Hand Sanitizer, $1.50 or 5/$5

“Spread love, not germs. This pocket-sized bottle contains natural ingredients and powerful germ killers that get hands clean, wherever you go.  Vitamins B5 and E nourish skin, kills germs without water.”

Available in scents like Nectarine Mint, White Citrus, and Fresh Lemon.

Three of you lucky ladies are going to be germ-free thanks to Bath & Body Works!  Winners will receive a Bath & Body Works hand soap AND a PocketBac Hand Sanitizer.  And it gets even better – you have your choice between three of my favorite scents:  Warm Vanilla Sugar, Cherry Blossom, or Cucumber Melon (substitutions may be made if a scent becomes unavailable).

Mandatory Entry:  Tell me which type of soap you’d like to try most, and what Bath & Body Works scent is your favorite (not limited to those mentioned in this post).

Extra Entries:

1 Entry – Subscribe to the Bath & Body Works Newsletter (bottom right corner).

I received a MyClyns personal germ protection spray!  I keep it in my purse for all of those questionable public moments – the one where a stranger coughs on me, a baby sneezes too close, or there are runny noses galore.  I already have hand sanitizer with me, but I don’t want to rub it on my face or spray get it in my eyes, nose, or ears.

Vitalicious: 100 Calorie Muffins & Brownies!

Posted on: December 18, 2009 @ 6:00 am     1 Comment »

vitalicious

“Vitalicious® Inc. is the market leader of innovative “vital and delicious” baked goods that promote a healthy lifestyle, without sacrificing taste. First to market with 100-calorie servings, Vitalicious® is leading the way to a holistic approach to maximize satisfaction with minimum calories, with products that are low fat and high in fiber and nutrients. Vitalicious® has created a unique triangle of need-satisfaction (All-Natural ingredients + Nutraceuticals + Weight Management), the only baked-goods company in this niche. Founded in 1999, Vitalicious® creates and sells a variety of unique, healthy, value-added baked goods under the VitaMuffin™, VitaTop™, VitaBrownie™, VitaCake™, and VitaMuffin Mix™ trademarks. Vitalicious® products are now sold at stores nationwide and at www.vitalicious.com (www.vitalicious.ca for Canadian Residents). Here at Vitalicious® our mission is simple: to make healthy and delicious baked goods that are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals.”

When you’re watching your weight or trying to diet, giving up your favorite snacks is difficult.  And for some of us, it’s painstaking, devastating, and downright horrible.  No cake?  No cookies?  No brownies?  No muffins?  No fun of any kind.

I’ve been highlighting a healthy snack option just about every week over the past few months, but there’s one thing I haven’t been able to suggest a replacement for:  baked goods.  However, that’s back when I didn’t know about Vitalicious!

basket

Vitalicious sent me a sampler of their products, similar to the one pictured above (that’s the Gift of Health Sampler – holiday gift, anyone?).  It contained VitaBrownies and VitaTops in the following flavors:  Chocolate Mint, Banana Nut, Double Chocolate Dream, Deep Chocolate, Fudgy Peanut Butter Chip, Golden Corn, CranBran, AppleBerry, MultiBran, and BlueBran.

While my original interest was in the most chocolate packed flavors I could find, my favorite is actually the Golden Corn variety!  They’re absolutely delicious with a tiny dab of your favorite butter substitute, paired with a healthy, low-sodium soup for lunch of dinner.  A dinner that could be quite boring is now packed with flavor!

I found some of the flavors a tiny bit plain – you can only get so close to the real thing for 100 calories – but there’s a simple fix!  A little dab of peanut butter (or jam) on top give the VitaTops a boost without adding a ton of calories; just remember that I said a LITTLE dab, or else the extra calories will add up quickly.  A chocolate muffin from Costco is around 700 HUNDRED calories, so even if you add a little extra to your VitaTop, you’ll still be making a great snacking choice.  Plus peanut butter is filling and packed with protein!

If you’re more of a DIY gal, Vitalicious also offers a variety of baking mixes for a selection of muffins and brownies.  The satisfaction of baking without all the high-calorie goodies it normally results in; plus, you won’t have to go out and buy a slew of special ingredients!

If you’re looking for a healthy gift to give or receive, Vitalicious is a great option!  Just remember that the products need to remain frozen, so don’t get more than your dorm freezer can handle!

WW Day 4: PreHistin Pre-Histamine

Posted on: December 17, 2009 @ 8:00 am     43 Comments »

wellness

PreHistin, The World’s FIRST Pre-Histamine, contains a proprietary, patented formula and unique delivery system of cobalamin to help regulate and maintain a normal immune response to allergens.  Currently, top-selling allergy-relief products are for the reduction of symptoms AFTER the allergy kicks in.  These anti-histamines act to block the effects of histamine only after histamine has already been released and symptoms have set in.  Additionally, anti-histamines often result in uncomfortable and irritating side effects.  PreHistin is totally different!  It regulates the release of histamines so your body doesn’t overreact to foreign substances.  PreHistin was clinically show to effectively maintain healthy IgE levels, which have been linked to allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose.

For best results, begin taking PreHistin 30 days ahead of and then throughout the allergy season by dissolving a great tasting cherry flavored lozenge under the tongue twice per day, every day, and then swallowing.”

prehistin

Okay so we’re not in allergy season right now – but I can’t wait to have this come springtime!  I received a sample of PreHistin that I’ll be hording until around March, and then I’ll be pumping it into the boyfriend.  He has terrible allergies that cause him to be cranky and miserable all spring.  I love that PreHistin works to PREVENT allergies rather than just treating the symptoms once they appear!  It will be such a relief not to have to listen to him blowing his nose every five minutes – yuck!

One of you lovely gals will win your own box of PreHistin, for yourself or an allergy sufferer in your life.

Mandatory Entry:  Check out this info about PreHistin and tell me something you learned (other than the info in this post)!

WW Day 3 – Lipo-Flavonoid Giveaway

Posted on: December 16, 2009 @ 7:00 am     33 Comments »

wellness

“An estimated 50 million people of all ages in the United States suffer from tinnitus, or ringing of the ears, at various degrees, ranging from what would be described as a mild nuisance to that of a debilitating, chronic condition that interferes with quality of life.  While tinnitus – whcih can occur as a ringing, buzzing, whooshing, or other sound within the ear – can occur as a result of age, ongoing exposure to loud noises, or from a damaging, sudden noise occurrence, it can also be a symptom of something else, such as Meniere’s Syndrome, which includes a combination such of other symptoms.

Lipo-Flavonoid, a nutritional supplement developed by an otolayrangologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) in the early 1960s, has been providing relief and improvement of the condition from many sufferers.  Lipo-Flavonoid provides nutritional support to improve circulation in the inner ear for overall ear health.  When the circulation in the inner ear is improved, the microscopic hair cells responsible for transmitting electrical impulses of sound to the brain stay flexible, and fluids within the ear canals may flow better (it is thought that a primary cause of tinnitus is damage to or stiffening of these microscopic hair cells within the ear).

Suggested retail is $29.95 (for a 100 count bottle).”

I’ve suffered from tinnitus for seven or so years now.  Quite frankly, it’s a major pain in the ass.  Having a noise in my head that I can’t shut off has become an infuriating daily occurrence, and so I’ve been thrilled to review Lipo-Flavonoid.  It would be nice to enjoy silence once in a while, instead of always having to run some sort of electronic or white noise machine.

I haven’t been using Lipo-Flavonoid for long enough to see (or hear!) an improvement, but I’m looking forward to that point!  Lipo-Flavonoid is an easy addition to my routine; I take 3 capsules after each meal.  They have a lightly sweet smell, so there’s none of the disgusting “medicine smell” that often makes taking pills difficult for me.

One of you will have the chance to try Lipo-Flavonoid for yourself!

Mandatory Entry:  Do you suffer from tinnitus, or would you give Lipo-Flavonoid to someone else (and who would it be)?
