BIC Razors for a Close, Comfortable Shave

Posted on: November 10, 2009 @ 6:00 am     1 Comment »

bicBIC has been providing reliable pens, but now they’ve got swag for more than just your schoolbag…  Okay, so BIC razors aren’t brand new, but they’re totally new to me!  I was sent several of BIC’s finest, and they’ve become permanent residents in my shower.

My personal favorite is the Soleil Shimmer – it’s pink and sparkly, just like my favorite lip gloss.

More importantly, the handle is amazing.  It contours perfectly to my hand, and even features an indentation for my thumb that makes the shaving process much easier to control.

The triple blade action also gives me a closer shave (the head pivots!), yet irritate my skin much less than my normal razor.  I still need to moisturize after shaving, but that’s no big deal, as my legs no longer burn post-razor!  This is most likely because there’s a Soothing Moisture Strip (enriched with Cocoa Butter) above the blades.

My only issue is that I feel the blades on these razors dull faster than other razors.  However, the more comfortable shave is worth the slight inconvenience of changing blades more often.

BIC has an extensive selection of women’s razors, ranging from single to triple blade styles.  I prefer razors with reusable handles, but there’s a variety of disposables as well!

If it’s time to replace your razors,  print this coupon for BIC!  You can find them at your local grocery or drugstore, as well as superstores like Target or Wal-Mart.

*Special Spotlight* Gillette Venus Embrace Razors

Posted on: October 19, 2009 @ 9:00 am     1 Comment »

Gilette Venus EmbraceThe new Gillette Venus Embrace razor for women has 5 blades to give you the best and closest shave ever.

In my opinion, the Venus Embrace is the best razor on the market, and I’m not just saying that because they sent me one to try out. That was just a nice bonus as I was already a huge fan of Venus.

The 5 blades really make all the difference. The five curve-hugging blades individually adjust to stay in contact with your skin, even around tricky areas like your knees, ankles, and bikini area. You don’t have to use the Gillette Satin Care Shave Gel to get the perfect shave, but the two products definitely work better together. (Plus the Satin Care Shave Gel comes in some pretty yummy scents like Alluring Avocado and Lavender Kiss!)

Venus Embrace Razor Head

The Embrace razor is very easy to handle, maneuvers great around tough spots, and doesn’t irritate my legs like most other razors do. It’s hard for me to even imagine that everyone isn’t already using a Venus razor, but it was pointed out to me that most people just pick up whatever is on sale or the cheapest and then just buy the replacements heads for it. If this sounds like you, then it’s time to mix it up a bit!! Do yourself (and your legs) a favor by picking up the new Gillette Venus Razor & Satin Care Shave Gel on Drugstore.com or purchase in Wal Mart, Target, or your local supermarket.

Don’t forget that you can enter to win both the Gillette Venus Embrace razor and the Satin Care Shave Gel in our Fashionable Gals For A Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Fund Raiser and Giveaway. (Look for prize packs number 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 15 and 16!)

*Special Spotlight* Whish Body Products!

Posted on: October 09, 2009 @ 6:00 am     No Comments »

whish“Jesse Werner has always had very sensitive skin, making ingrown hairs; razor burns and cuts a part of his daily shaving routine. After trying countless products and razors, including prescription creams, Jesse finally found the solution to his rough shave problem – a European cream that he used with a shave brush. One day, Jesse’s wife, finding herself stuck without shaving cream, asked to borrow his. Undaunted by the leathery chair smell, she swirled it on and set to shaving – using both the cream and the brush for the first time –and experienced, in her opinion, the best shave of her life. Her only comment was “Wish I had something that worked so well, without leaving me smelling like an old English guy.’”

Okay, so how adorable is that? I love that a man created this amazing line of skincare and shaving products for women… and even more so that he did it for his wife! 1,000 bonus points for Whish, heh!

However, let me make it clear- Whish products don’t need any “bonus points,” as they’re absolutely fabulous on their own! The line is made up of three luxurious scents: Almond, Lemongrass, and Pomegranate. Although I haven’t smelled the Lemongrass, I adore the Pomegranate, and I’m head-over-heels for Almond! It has a delicate smell, less like the actual nut and more like almond cookies!

shave

Each scent is featured in the main categories of products: Wash, Exfoliate, Shave, Moisturize, and Perfect. These categories feature Body Wash, Sugar Scrub, Shave Cream (pump or jar), Body Butter, Hair Inhibiting Gel, and an Ingrown Hair Serum. I got to try the Body Wash (Almond) and Body Butter (Pomegranate). Absolute shower Heaven! The products are all natural, and contain many organic ingredients- such as organic shea butter, organic marigold, organic rice bran oil, and organic seaweed extract- what luxury! After using the two products that Whish sent me, my skin has become silky smooth and perfectly pampered!

brush

Whish also features a selection of beautiful shaving brushes. I don’t have one (yet!) but I’m fiercely lusting after them- especially the ones with the Swarovski crystals! There’s a nice selection of colors and designs, and the brushes range from $65 to $170; I think one of these babies would be a fabulous gift (and Christmas is coming up)! Each brush is handmade in England, made entirely of fine badger hair, and under a one-year warranty. What a wonderful way to be pampered…

If you want to stay updated on all that is Whish, you can sign up for their newsletter here!

Whish was fabulously generous and sent me two products to review…  But their generosity doesn’t stop with me!  Whish donated a Pomegranate Body Butter and Shave Cream in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Fashionable Gals for a Cure!  The duo is worth $48, but you can enter to win for just a $1 donation!  PLEASE check it out here, and keep Whish in mind for all your body needs : )

Birthday Bash Giveaway #9

Posted on: July 09, 2009 @ 12:33 am     144 Comments »

venusLately, I’ve been sharing some of my favorite razors and shaving tips with you. I love all the razors I’ve talked about, but my everyday razor (and favorite) is the Venus Embrace Razor from Gillette. It’s a razor with a very simple design, which makes it perfect for basic in-and-out of the shower shaving! I love the fancier razors with scents and special features when I’m spending time in the shower enjoying masks or treatments. Most days, though, I try to spend as little time in the shower as possible so I can get clean and get going!

The Venus Embrace Features:

~5 Blades for a dramatically smooth shave

~Ribbon of moisture for a smooth glide

~Interchangeable Blade Refill Cartridges

~Soft Grip handle for no-slip control

~ShowerPod for convenient in-shower storage

venus-embrace

I like that the head of the razor is flexible, so it doesn’t matter what area I’m shaving- whether it’s under my arm or behind my knee, the Venus glides over my skin without any inflexibility that causes nicks. The moisture ribbon provides enough conditioning for underarms and quick touch-ups, when I don’t have the time for shaving gel. Plus, the handle fits comfortably in my hand and has a gel handle, so I know I have a steady grip that won’t result in razor slippage and uncomfortable cuts!

Buy It! You can purchase the Venus Embrace anywhere you normally buy Gillette products- Target, Wal-Mart, drugstores, grocery stores… Pretty much everywhere! You can also order online from Amazon or Drugstore.com! If you order from Drugstore.com, it only costs $12.99 for the razor, refills, and the shower pod!

Win It! FIVE lucky readers will win the Venus Embrace AND a can of Satin Care Lavender Kiss Shave Gel (which I reviewed previously). Love it, right? The contest will run until July 14th at midnight EST and is open to US and Canadian residents! You can enter by EITHER leaving a comment below OR sending an email to thefashionablegal@hotmail.com with the subject line “Gillette Giveaway.” Please send an email OR leave a comment for EACH entry, more if doing something gets you multiple entries (such as subscribing, which will require you leave 2 comments)!

Satin Care from Gillette

Posted on: June 30, 2009 @ 4:51 am     4 Comments »

300Since my legs are so dry and sensitive, even the best razor doesn’t make shaving a great experience unless I have a high performing shave gel to back it up! My shower is about as big as a porta-potty and doesn’t provide a much more pleasant experience (although it’s certainly cleaner!) so I need to be in and out fast!

Gillette recently introduced a new Satin Care shave gel line that has a bunch of cool new fragrances: Alluring Avocado, Melon Splash, Radiant Apricot, Vanilla Dream, Wild Berry, Oceania, and Lavender Kiss. I’m really intrigued by the avocado scent- that’s something I’ve never seen before!

The Satin Care shave gel that I’ve been testing out is the Lavender Kiss variety. Lavender is one of my favorite scents because of its relaxing properties. I find that it’s a great product to use when I’m showering before bed!

“Lavender Kiss provides a cushion of protection that hugs your legs during your shave, so your razor glides smoothly across the skin. Its rich, creamy lather makes it easy to see where you’ve already shaved and leaves your legs feeling soft and smooth like satin. The clear purple gel, infused with a luxurious, enveloping lavender scent pampers your senses.”

Because my shower is so small, it’s hard to keep the gel from being washed off my legs before I’m done shaving. What I really like about this formulation is that even in areas where the cream has been washed off before I shave, my skin is still smooth and moisturized. Some shave gels just don’t have any standing benefits and when they’re gone, they’re gone! Lavender Kiss keeps working even when it’s gone, which makes it an obvious choice when I hop in the shower.

Any of the Satin Care shave gels are available at drugstores, Target, Wal-Mart, and wherever else you normally buy Gillette products! You can also order them online straight for Drugstore.com for $3.69, but since the suggested retail is $2.99 you can probably find them cheaper if you just head to the store!

Make Your Shower a Spa with Venus Spa Breeze!

Posted on: June 24, 2009 @ 6:03 pm     1 Comment »

venus-spa-breezeAs much as I consider shaving cream a necessity, sometimes I’m in too much of a hurry and just need to get my shave on. Thankfully, the people at Gillette anticipated this type of rush and launched the 2-in-1 Venus Spa Breeze Razor!

“The secret to an easy yet indulgent shave? Venus Spa Breeze. Simply add water for a skin-loving, light lather and a smooth shave—there’s no need for separate shave cream. Even better, the shave gel bars are infused with the fresh scent of white tea to soothe your senses.”

Above and below the 3-blade razor are strips of luxurious shave gel. While they obviously don’t give the same lather as a separate shave gel, the strips help to condition skin and ensure that the blades glide smoothly over every inch that you shave.

The white tea scent is a total bonus; it’s very relaxing! The other really cool plus is that the Venus Spa Breeze is also available as a disposable razor- the only disposable that has a built in conditioning system. I normally dread disposables and hate having to take them on vacation, but the Spa Breeze will ensure you keep your legs sexy over vacation!

For less than $10 ($9.99, to be exact) you can pick up the Venus Spa Breeze System: a refillable razor, two shave gel bar cartridges, and a shower compact. On Drugstore.com it retails for $11.99 BUT when you buy two Gillette products, you’ll receive $2 off! If you’re planning a trip, the disposables are a steal at only $6.99 for a 2-pack!

What’s on Your Face?

Posted on: May 20, 2009 @ 10:32 pm     No Comments »

epicare-no-watermark

“Epicare is the world’s first Do-It-Yourself Manual Threading device to remove unwanted facial hair. Its unique spring action removes unwanted hair from the roots safely and effectively without damaging the skin. Just Bend and Roll. It’s as simple as that! You can now have the benefits of threading without the expensive as facial hair removal is at your fingertips!”

I love this idea! Basically, the middle part of the wand (?) is made of a narrow coil. You hold the handles and bend the device into a “u,” then roll it back and forth over unwanted hair. I’m not going to lie-it totally stings, but not any worse than tweezing or waxing. Since it removes multiple hairs simultaneously, it’s a quicker procedure than tweezing, so the pain goes away a lot sooner. I’ve never had a threading session, and now I’m never going to need one! The epicare works really well; I tried it on my boyfriend’s arm* (before my face!) when he wasn’t paying attention and it totally took the hair right off (I’m totally girlfriend of the year material). Hair is pulled out by the root, which as you probably already know, makes regrowth time a lot longer.

I really like the fact that it’s not at all obvious what this tool is for. I hate realizing that I’ve left tweezers out when someone comes over… They don’t need to know that I wasn’t born without perfect eyebrows (don’t use the epicare there, though), much less that I have hair on my face! Just make sure you keep the epicare free of hair, or you’re going to have some explaining to do. Another plus is that it doesn’t break me out, which shaving/waxing/tweezing all tend to. I guess it’s probably because the epicare just glides gently over the skin, whereas sometimes I pinch myself with tweezers, wax pulls on the skin, and razor blades get dragged across it. And always a plus-epicare doesn’t use any chemicals, and doesn’t send anything down the drain, so it’s cost effective AND eco-friendly! The device itself lasts for 6-8 months, so you won’t be throwing away lots of plastic like you would with disposable razors or replacement blades.

There’s a bunch of other information (safety, materials, etc.) that you can check out here. The bottom line, though, is that it’s safe, strong, hypoallergenic, and totally effective. You can buy one for only $16.99 directly from Face Authority. It’s available in green, red, yellow, blue, black, pink, and lavender. Oh, and right now, first class shipping is free in the US and only $1 internationally! Annnd, if you’re still worried you won’t like it, there’s a 14-day return policy. So really, what have you got to lose-except that unwanted facial hair?

*Don’t taunt your boyfriend with it. He’ll get pissy. Fair warning!

Ripping It Out By The Roots!

Posted on: August 04, 2008 @ 5:07 pm     1 Comment »

Recently, I acquired half a box of Nad’s Facial Hair Removal Strips. If you’re curious as to why it was half a box-I swapped away an unwanted lip gloss for them on Makeup Alley (if you haven’t heard of this site, expect a review in the near future)!

I figured if they worked well, I could spend less time hunched over a mirror tweezing, and more time showing off my smooth face and well groomed eye brows. Plus, they’re only $5.99 a box on drugstore.com. Here’s what the site has to say about them:

“Nad’s hair removal strips are easy to use anywhere, anytime. They remove hair by the roots you stay smooth and hair free for weeks. Suitable for sensitive, delicate areas including face and bikini line. With regular use hair growth is progressively slowed down.”
Here’s what I have to say!

Ease of Use: Honestly, the strips are pretty damn easy to use. I didn’t feel like getting out of bed, so I grabbed my portable vanity mirror and tried ‘em out while still comfortably under the covers.

Actual Hair Removal: So-so. Since you “activate” the wax by rubbing the strips between your palms to warm the icky green gel, it didn’t grab on to the hairs as firmly as wax in a salon would. Even though the directions advise that you don’t go over the same spot multiple times, I found I had to in order to really clear the area.

After Effects: It’s been a solid twenty minutes, and my face is still blotchy and burning. I tried the strips on my chin, upper lip, neck, and in between my eyebrows-those are areas I normally tweeze, bleach, or don’t pay any attention to (my neck really doesn’t need any hair removal) but I thought I’d try it out. The brow area is fine, but it also didn’t really lose any hair to the strip. As for the Soothing & Finishing Wipes-gross! The smell wasn’t quite as bad as the desensitizing wipes, but the wipe had a simultaneously dry and oily sensation that I really didn’t enjoy. Really, I’m tempted to go scrub my face… but again, still burning! Also, I’m still going to need some tweezing to finish cleaning up, and perhaps some ointment to calm the impending rash. See how much I love you guys?

Overall: Even at $5.99 a box, I don’t think these strips are really worth it. I do have another six strips left, and I won’t be tossing them-I’ll probably keep them around for a day when I need a quick touch up and can’t find the tweezers. However, if NAD’s decides to make new before and after treatments to go along with the strips, I think they’d be worth another try!

Off to Get Some Ice,

The Beauty Sniper
