The rugged men’s denim brand Cult of Individuality, that has gained a following since its Spring 2009 launch among Hollywood hitters like Jerry O’Connell, Jamie Kennedy, Kevin Dillon, Gilles Marini, and Peter Facinelli, launched their Cult of Individuality women’s collection at Project Las Vegas and Coterie earlier this month.

The line will be a female appropriation of the men’s brand that is known for its “cult classic” fits and innovative washes that aren’t often seen at the sub $200 retail price point. The men’s collection is sold in top denim specialty stores nationwide, as well as at Bloomingdale’s. “I brought Cult of individuality in first as a price point strategy, but now it has turned into a player within our denim assortment due to their washes and fits gaining momentum day by day” says men’s buyer Alan Fernandez of Atrium in New York City.

Cult of Individuality designer Ron Poisson is answering his buyer’s demands for a female equivalent of his well-performing novelty men’s collection. Debut fits include the “Bohemi” bootcut, the “Karma” straight leg, the “Teaser” skinny, the “Flirt” denim legging and the “Alter Ego” boyfriend fit. The line features a signature pony hair patch on the back of the waist. Treatments and techniques include hand abrasions, acid wash, enzyme wash, rip and repair, dip dye and more. The wholesale price range for Cult of Individuality’s women’s collection is $98-$135 retail. The line will be carried by denim specialty stores including Atrium, E Street Denim and Sebastian’s Closet for Fall 2010, with the first delivery in July.

“Cult of Individuality jeans feel like home the moment you put them on, they feel like you’ve had them forever. My line is for people who live in their jeans and simply love denim,” says Cult of Individuality designer Ron Poisson.  The company is based in City of Industry, CA, with sales operations out of their New York City showroom.

If you’re a denim fanatic, this is surely exciting news!  I’m sure we’ll be seeing these jeans popping up on female celeb soon – and you’ll be able to snag your own pair in just a few months!  I love the classy, comfy look of Cult of Individuality’s denim (and I’m a big fan of those shoes, too!).  Will you be picking up a pair?

Zoya at New York Fashion Week! (Part 2)

Products Used: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha, Zoya Nail Polish in Jolie, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Suno’s opening presentation was jaw dropping to say the least.  Using their signature Kenyan prints, designers Max Osterweis and Erin Betty playfully combined them with fresh innovative ones.  This chaotic mix of patterns gave off and fun, lively vibe that any party girl would want to add to her collection.

Manicurist Amber Stores used Tasha with a thin coat of Jolie to create a luminous look flattering the make-up. Prior to polishing Amber prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor Topcoat finishing with Armor Basecoat.

NYFW:  Diesel Black Gold – Fall 2010
Show Date: Tuesday, 2/16/2010 – 2 PM
Location:  Warehouse 44th St.

Diesel Black and Gold’s Fall 2010 show screamed confidence. They stuck with the distressed, faded jeans, but this time they add a more gothic/ western vibe to their looks.  This season had a plethora of black denim to choose from and for the more adventurous type there was a pair of black leather pants paired with a denim long sleeve shirt. All over the board there was black in denim and leather form, flannels, light blue denim pieces, and clean, tailored suits sprinkled in throughout the collection.

Manicurist Amber Stores sprayed each hand with Zoya Germinator prior to manicure. She then prepped each nail with Zoya Anchor basecoat as well as with Zoya Get even. She then polished each nail with a base of  Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha and then a top layer of Zoya Nail Polish in Erin creating a gorgeous nude nail.  After polishing she finished with Zoya Anchor Topcoat and Zoya Renew. Lastly, for a nice, sweet touch Zoya Lemon Dream lotion was used to soften all hands.

NYFW:  Thuy  – Fall 2010
Show Date: Tuesday, 2/16/2010 – 3 PM
Location:  Bryant Park – Salon

Products Used:  Zoya Remove+,  Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Get Even, Zoya Armor Topcoat, Zoya Hurry Up speed drops, Zoya Renew Polish Rejuvenator, Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha, Zoya Nail Polish in Erin, Zoya Lemon Dream lotion, and Zoya Germinator.

Layers! Something must have been in the water at Fashion Week because almost everyone was using layers, including Thuy.  Thuy, however, used layers with pockets and folds creating a beautiful hip fullness.

Thuy also used nudes using Zoya Tasha was used as a the base color with Zoya a layer of Erin over the top for a bit of glamour. Manicurist Sunshine Outing prepped each nail with Zoya Remove+ and Anchor basecoat finishing with a topcoat of Armor.

Thuy brought the crowd, and in this crowd were some BIG names, Kim Kardashian, Housewives; Kelly Bensimon, Danielle Staub, Jill Zarin, Alix McCord, Simon Van Kempen, Tabatha Coffey, Olivia Palermo, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Eve Salvail, Susie Essman, Mia Moretti, and Markus Klinko.

NYFW: Susan Cianciolo – Fall 2010
Show Date: Wednesday, 2/17/2010 – 4:30 PM

Products Used
:  Zoya Remove+,  Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Get Even, Zoya Armor Topcoat, Zoya Hurry Up speed drops, Zoya Renew Polish Rejuvenator, Zoya Nail Polish in Gia, Veruschka, Ibiza, OC Cooler and more, Zoya Lemon Dream lotion, and Zoya Germinator.

Combining art and fashion in a gallery presentation, Susan Cianciolo’s Fall 2010 collection was more of a performance piece than the usual standing model presentation. The show Underneath the, Sea Inside a Mountain used the artistry of clothes, makeup and nail design to transport viewers to a place where they could frolic through the fields with Julie Andrews or if they so pleased, swim the seas with Ariel. Flower Children and Mermaids in an explosion of hand crafted colors and patterns all under the flashes of an artfully placed group of Japanese paparazzi. A performance indeed!

Happy to have over 300 fashion colors to choose from to create her part of the vision, Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each nail with Zoya Remove+ and Zoya Anchor Basecoat and then polished the nails in a rainbow of colors including Zoya Veruschka, Zoya Gia, Ibiza and Zoya OC Cooler and finished each look with glossy coat of Zoya Armor.

NYFW: JSong – Fall 2010

Products Used:  Zoya Remove+,  Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Get Even, Zoya Armor Topcoat, Zoya Hurry Up speed drops, Zoya Renew Polish Rejuvenator, Zoya Nail Polish in Jessica, Tasha, Bailey and Suzanne.

Romantic Fantasy is the ideal way to describe JSong’s collection. Designer Way Zen used the motto In Nature’s Magical Garden and the clothes definitely represented that. JSong followed the main theme of fashion week this season, layers, with a unique JSong spin using layers of eyelets in the shape of leaves, crochet shawls, and sheer tops with patterns similar to peacock feathers.

Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each nail with Zoya Remove+ and a basecoat of Anchor. She used Zoya Suzanne, Zoya Tasha, Zoya Jessika, Zoya Bailey and finished with a topcoat of Armor.

Zoya at New York Fashion Week! (Part 1)

Posted on: March 09, 2010 @ 12:00 pm     2 Comments »

NYFW: Toni Maticevski – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Thursday, 2/11/2010 – 2 PM
LOCATION: Altman Building (135 W. 18th St.)

PRODUCTS USED
: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya UltraGlitter in Nova  with Zoya Nail Polish in Casey, Sloane and Richelle, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Designer Toni Maticevski isn’t big on providing media with his source of inspiration. He prefers the viewer to think about what they see rather than telling them what “to see”. It is this interpretation that allows the beauty of Maticevski to be that of the beholder. Exaggerated doll-like layers and ornamentation took this viewer straight to Hollywood with a visions of starlets making the scene.

Nails complimented the clothes, hair and makeup and worked double duty as accessories. Led by the creative Dhav Naidu, Manicurist Sunshine Outing and team treated each nail as a unique canvas using Zoya Nail Polish in Casey for the warmer skin toned models and Sloane for the cool chickies. Zoya Richelle and Nova UltraGlitter went on ring fingers as accent color with Zoya Armor topcoat delivering the glossy finish.

NYFW: Peter Som – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Wednesday, 2/13/2010 – 1 PM
LOCATION: Milk Studios (450 W. 15th)

PRODUCTS USED:
Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Charity, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Using muted color, layers, and printed fabrics the chaotic yet controlled vision of Peter Som for Fall 2010 was refreshing to say the least. The added touch of Swarovski crystals enriched this diverse collection even more.

Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing with the muted mauve Charity and finishing with a topcoat of Armor. The look complimented the bruised makeup (black plum lips!) and overall moody black palette of the show.

NYFW: Joseph Altuzarra – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Wednesday, 2/13/2010 – 1 PM
LOCATION: Milk Studios (450 W. 15th)

PRODUCTS USED: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Polish in Tasha and Erin, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

The fashion “in crowd” shows up for Joseph Altuzarra and everyone takes notes. In just a few seasons Altuzarra has managed to capture lots of attention with his recognizable looks and quality details.

To compliment the dark almost oily eye and gray/nude mouth created by the makeup team, Manicurist Indigo Smith and team prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor basecoat prior to polishing in nudes then finishing with a glossy Zoya Armor topcoat.

NYFW: Leanne Marshall – Fall 2010
SHOW DATE: Saturday, 2/14/2010 – 4 PM
LOCATION: Union Square Ballroom

PRODUCTS USED: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Polish in Jo, Zoya Nail Polish in Betty, Zoya MatteVelvet in Harlow, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Leanne Marshall the designer has arrived. Moving from typography as inspiration last season to topography (maps) this season the looks shown at the 2010 Fall Leanne Marshall show reflected the designers personality perfectly. Leanne’s work has greatly matured since winning Bravo’s Project Runway in 2008, now unafraid to be true to her own fragile nature, Marshall created a romantic vision for Fall 2010. The collection was true to her roots – yes, the layers are still there but now they are less structured and everywhere from coats to evening wear.

Manicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing and finished with an ultra glossy topcoat of Armor.

NYFW: Bibhu Mohapatra – Fall 2010
Show Date: Monday, 2/15/2010-12:30 PM
Location:  Marianne Boesky Gallery ( W 22nd St)

Products Used: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Base Coat, Zoya Nail Polish in Sasha, Zoya Nail Polish in Blair, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Bibhu Mohapatra had a major amount of hype surrounding him this year and that is all thanks to his nomination for a Rising Star Award by the Fashion Group International and his recent grant he received from the CDFA (Council of Fashion Designers America) and the New York Economic Development Corporation. Along with 11 other designers, Bibhu will be given a reduced rent in the NYC Garment Center as well as mentoring and other opportunities. This coveted spot in the CFDA Fashion Incubator and being one of the finalists for the Rising Star Awards lands Bibhu in the thick of it all with the full support of Council of Fashion Designers America and The Fashion International Group.

Given all the buzz, People were practically bursting at the seams to get into the art gallery that held his 20’s inspired collection.  Feminine and fitted pieces created an elegance that any female today would want, making Bibhu’s collection old-fashion as well as modern at the same time.

Manicurist Jackie SAULSBERY working with the Zoya Design Team came up with the combination of a full coat of Sasha layered with a thin coat of Blair creating a deep sparkly look.  Each set of nails was prepped using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing and finished with an glossy topcoat of Armor.

NYFW & Tarte Cosmetics How To’s (Part 1)

Posted on: February 18, 2010 @ 9:00 am     2 Comments »

Lela Rose Fall 2010 Look: tarte for Beauty.com
Makeup Artist: Tina Turnbrow
Inspiration: Nature’s celestial landscapes-
think of the nighttime sky and imagine
a full moon peaking behind the clouds.

Eyes: Silvery, moonlit eyes-a silvery/black smoky eye without edges and just a touch of blue. The eye is almost 3D, rounded and mysterious.

Direction: Think of the eye as a rounded sphere or planet. The inner crease of the eye is darkened up to the brow with the shimmery deep blue gray (eyeshadow in Lucy I’m Home). The outer area is rounded, softly muted blackness. The center of the eye is the lightest, with darker edges (inner and outer corner of eye) ending in black (Eye Couture Palette). Apply blue lagoon only in the center of the top and lower lids. Blend the blue into the gray and then into a bit of the black. There should be a bit of the blue and silver gray (Eye Couture Palette) blended in the center of the lower lashline. Apply smolderEYES in the inner rim of the eyes. Top it off with a coat of Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara on the top and bottom lashes (no curling needed). Leave eyebrows-do not fill in. After finishing the eyes, clean underneath with The Eraser 4-in-1 Natural Concealer.

Complexion: It should feel muted like a hazy, cloudy sky. The mineral powder will matte and tone skin.
· The Eraser 4-in-1 Natural Concealer-use after applying shadows to
avoid fallout.
· Tarte Smooth Operator Tinted Oil-Free Moisturizer with SPF 20
(one shade lighter than model’s complexion)
·  Provocateur Mineral Pressed Powder with SPF 8
·  T-Zone Travel
cheeks: Just a touch of healthy blush.
·  Blissful natural cheek stain (warm peachy pink)
·  powder over blissful with Provocateur Mineral Pressed Powder with SPF 8

Besame Cosmetics & How to Choose Red Lipstick

Posted on: November 23, 2009 @ 6:00 am     2 Comments »

besame

I am a lipstick addict.  I have as many tubes as a well stocked department store, and a pile of lip glosses to pair with.  Nothing makes me feel put together and polished than a beautiful lip stick – and really, few things are easier!

As much as I love my pinks, beiges, oranges, purples – yes, I am quite adventurous with my lip color!- red lipstick is my absolute holy grail of beauty products.  Any look, event, or mood can be brightened with a coat of perfect red.  It’s sexy, classic, elegant…  All those things we modern women strive to be!

Not any red lipstick will do.  The formula must be creamy and long-lasting, the shade must be flattering, and the packaging should be pretty.  If the tube is ugly, I won’t be reaching for it very often, right?

While browsing photos of pinup models and reading retro fashion blogs, my attention was caught by a line of cosmetics previously unknown to me:  Besame Cosmetics.  The romantic, vintage feel of the line, coupled with the stunning array of colors ensnared me, and I knew that I had to try the line for myself!  Wonderfully, Besame was willing to send me some products for review.

“Gabriela Hernandez, founder of Bésame Cosmetics Inc., has brought artistry and romance back to the cosmetics industry. She has created a line infused with a romantic sensibility that is rich in historical details. Her inspiration for it all was sparked by a combination of her background in art and design, a love for feminine detail, and fond memories of her glamorous grandmother.”

When asked to pick which colors I’d like to review, I found myself at a loss.  Originally, I’d been attracted to the reds – but then I was drawn in by the soft pinks, shimmering champagnes, and gorgeous golds.  But no!  I resisted temptation and selected three shades of rich, luscious red:  Cherry Red, Wild Orchid (which looks slightly more purple online), and Red Velvet (which I’m wearing right at this moment).

lipstick

(Cherry Red is 3rd from the top and Wild Orchid is at the very bottom.)

Both shades pictured above are from the Classic Enchanting Lipstick Collection, and retail for $15 apiece.  The tubes are sexy and chic, and the velvet bags they come in add an extra touch of glamour.  The lipsticks themselves?  Heaven.  Perfect, creamy formulation with beautiful coverage, providing even color that lasts and lasts.  I’m slightly tempted to build a Besame shrine to store them in, as they’re almost too pretty to wear…

lipstick2

(Red Velvet is pictured.)

The Voluptuous Lip Colour Set is brilliant; it includes everything you need for a perfect pout, every time.  Lip liner will help your lipstick last, while also ensuring that your mouth is well defined, rather than sloppy.  The rounded tip of the lipstick bullet is very easy to apply, and the tiny lip brush (which fits perfectly between thumb and forefinger) ensures that the bow of your lips and the corners of your mouth will be coated without looking clownish.  The set comes in a beautiful travel sleeve, and includes a detailed application guide.  All of that for only $35 – definitely something to smile about.

Besame Cosmetics also carries Classic (Lip) Glazes, Vintage Boudoir Rouge, Classic Masterliner Pencils (for lip and eye), Vintage Alluring Eye Shadows, and Cashmere Powder Compacts.  I haven’t tried any of these products yet, but look forward to doing so in the future – they’re all reasonably priced, beautifully packaged, and temptingly lovely.

lips

So how to pick the right shade of red lipstick for you?

  1. Decide if your skin is cool, warm, or neutral.  If you don’t know which you are or how to determine your tone, this article has easy to follow steps that will help you out!
  2. If you’re warm toned, look for orange or brownish undertones (i.e. brick, copper, coral).  If you’re cool toned like me, look for pink or blue undertones (i.e. ruby, fuschia, berry, fire engine).  Blue undertones will also make your teeth look whiter.  If you’re neutral, you have a lot more leeway and can play around to see what you like best!
  3. The pigmentation of your lipstick should be similar to that of your skin tone – if you’re very pale, look for a lighter, sheer lipstick that won’t be overpowering or too dramatic during the day (unless that’s what you’re going for!).  If you’re very dark skinned, you will need a lipstick that has a stronger color.
  4. Consider texture and consistency.  Mattes stay longer, but are more drying.  Glossy lipsticks often disappear quickly.  A creamy matte (like Besame) will last for a long time without overly drying your lips.  I like to add a touch of gloss over red lipstick, although sometimes a matte look is more suitable – that’s up to you!

AND don’t forget to prep lips appropriate! If yours are a bit flaky, use a gentle sugar scrub (with a washcloth, q-tip, or tooth brush).  Apply lip balm, but use sparingly – too much and your lipstick will easily smudge off.  Use liner and a lip brush for accuracy and neatness.  If you’re mouth gets a bit messy, use a q-tip dipped in makeup remover to go around the outline of your mouth.  Apply concealer around the edges to keep everything neat!

girlWith great trepidation, I just Google image searched “Girl On Top Book.”  Since I’m in the middle of my school’s student lounge, all I can say is thank goodness I remembered to include “book.”

As clever as Nicole Williams is, I wish just a tiny bit that she’d chosen a different name for her new book, “Girl on Top:  Your Guide to Turning Dating Rules into Career Success.”  Not to further the dirty talk, but that’s quite a mouthful.  It’s much easier to just refer to the book as “Girl on Top.”  Which of course, requires a certain extent of explanation.

Of course, you shouldn’t let a little initial awkwardness stop you from picking up what sounds to me like great read!

“Just like our tendency is to throw out the rule book and call, and call, and call, and call the super hot dude you can’t help but imagine is “the one,” you’re going to come across the job, the boss, the client you can’t imagine yourself living without, and it’s exactly here where you need play the game. Finding, catching, and building a relationship with a beau simply isn’t so different from finding, catching, and building a relationship with a boss… And for those of you who think you’re above playing games in love or in career, good for you… have fun in the mailroom.”

-Nicole Williams

calendar

What I’m even more excited about than the book itself is the tour Nicole Williams is currently on! As part of her book tour, sponsored by clothing company The Limited and Elle Magazine, “Nicole is hosting networking parties/runway shows in 15 cities across the United States.”  If you decide to attend (which I highly recommend you do!), there are perks beyond the fun of  fashion show and book talk:

- Chatting up the women in the area you need to have on speed dial
- An amazing gift bag (first come first serve, so get there on time!)
- An exclusive 40% discount on The Limited’s brand new business-chic attire (perfect for that next big meeting or interview)
- Free-flowing Girl On Top Cocktails
- Career advice from Nicole Williams (who couldn’t use that at a time like this?)

For Boston/MA based ladies like myself, here are the events to check out (I’ll be attending the Natick night, and possibly Braintree):

Date: 11.17.09

Location: The Limited at Natick

1245 Worcester Road, Natick, MA 01760

Date: 11.18.09

Location: The Limited at South Shore

250 Granite St., Braintree, MA 02184

Time: 6-9pm

If you plan on going, let me know so I can say hi!  My goal is to post pictures after the event, so stay tuned for those as well!

PS- If you’re not in Boston, there are several other events happening in November in other US cities; you can check the schedule by either looking at the calendar above, or visiting the RSVP dates (they list all the days/locations).
